Jacob Afolabi
Painter, from Nigeria
Jacob Afolabi (born in 1940) was the first artist to flourish from a workshop in Oshogbo, Nigeria in 1962, while employed as an actor there. Jacob was soon to become known as a printmaker, muralist, painter, textile artist and gallery director. He later worked with the African Studies Museum in Oshogbo.
His flowing images spiral and morph; figures being reinvented in various elastic shapes seemingly in motion. In some works it is as if electrical currents send sudden shock waves into the composition. One of his murals once enlivened a gas station wall along one of Oshogbo's main streets.
