Ovia Idah

Sculptor, painter, carpenter, educator, from Nigeria

Chief Ovia worked in many media including ebony, ivory, terracotta and cement. Idah was an unusual person who had his own tastes and whimsical idiosyncracies.  Ulli Beier called him a kind of Nigerian Gaudi.  Oba Akenzua of Benin enlisted him to do Palace work and he was put in charge of the Benin co-operative of carvers.
