Bruce Onobrakpeya

Opha (Red base), July 1973
deep etching, 12/20
dimensions: 31" x 22 6/16"

Opha is the Urhobo word for bride. Here she and her attendants have rubbed red camwood on their bodies, a tradition in the seven day ceremony. The format for the composition in this work is based on the strict symmetry of the Kalabari shrines which influenced a number of Onobrakpeya's pieces.
