Kingdoms Beneath the Earth, 2003
Copper relief-Repousse and chasing,
dimensions: 11" x 27 3/4"
This piece refers to the Benin king, Oba Ohen, who
was paralyzed. Such abnormalities were usually
couched in metaphorical terms. The Oba, who was seen
and revered as a God king, could not possess such
human attributes. Thus, in the art he was represented
with legs shaped into mudfish. Here, the king is seen
in the kingdom of the sea. The powers of the king
transcend all space such that even in the territory of
Olokun the Goddess of the sea, his powers still hold
sway.
