Melancholy, The Three of Us, 2002
oil on canvas,
dimensions: 48" x 60"

"Some times it is difficult to communicate when you know you are misunderstood, and your intentions are misconstrued. You know that the moment you open your mouth your words will be misinterpreted, so you become forlorn, secluded from society. You decide to hibernate from the world which calls you names, disregards you and discards you; takes advantage of you because you cannot stand up for yourself. You can't speak up, because you feel the world will not give you a chance. Adjusting to life in America, living with cousins who had spent some 5 years or more here in the States, was pretty difficult for me to handle their attitudes. The painting reflects on how I felt when I first cameu to this country. I felt so alone, depressed and bored. The painting also delves into the introvert relationship that I had established with the world around me. It seemed like this new world did not understand me, nor did I want to be understood. Everything offended me. Therefore, l decided to hibernate, to look within myself
